Comparing the draft 9 and 10, as someone new, not knowing that the tradition of a land grant univeristy is learning, discovery and engagement it would be difficult to determine how those phrases were selected to use in the mission and not other words.

I like draft 9 more than draft 10. ALso, the discovery paragraph needs to be stronger and state something like, "Through discovery, the campus fosters the creating of new knowledge, etc...

I felt the diversity statement should address religion, if it is going to included everything else. Also The statement about International involvement could also address NATIONAL involvement. I notice that many students are unaware of what is going on the the USA andthe world.

Anonymous makes a good point. In our 2001-2006 Mission Statement, many students and other citizens from the communities we serve asked me what Learning, Discovery and Engagement meant. While this lead-in gave me the opening to explain our tridentine mission, how many others didn't ask, but simply went away confused? A proper mission statement should not have to be translated in this manner, but should be easily understood by a ten year-old. So, I agree that L / D / E ought to be explained in plain English - - especially Learning, which sounds like improper grammar to those who are not familiar with the terminology.
